Ray Cole, Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (2017): Member of the Order of Canada

Ray Cole’s pioneering and sustained research provided the foundation for the field of environmentally responsible architecture. He is renowned for contributing to the development of green building assessment and regenerative building design tools in Canada. Over the course of his 40-year academic career at the University of British Columbia, this passionate and intellectually challenging professor inspired generations of environmentally aware and globally active architects. His legacy has resulted in Canada’s international recognition as a leader in green building design.

Donald Mavinic, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering (2017): Member of the Order of Canada

For his contributions to environmental engineering science and technology in Canada, notably in the areas of liquid wastewater and residuals management.

Arthur (Skip) Ray, Professor Emeritus of History (2007): Officer of the Order of Canada

For his contributions as a historical geographer and expert witness in Aboriginal land claims.

Peter Suedfeld, Professor Emeritus of Psychology (2000): Officer of the Order of Canada

Peter Suedfeld’s groundbreaking research expands our notions of resilience and transcends academic fields. Professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia and a prolific writer, he is internationally acclaimed for documenting previously ignored positive psychological and physical effects of extreme and challenging environments. His work has taken a critical look at the impacts on humans experiencing polar isolation, space exploration, sensory deprivation, decision making during international crises, and such traumatic experiences as genocide. He is highly regarded both as a mentor and active member of his community.

Jim Zidek, Professor Emeritus of Statistics (2004): Officer of the Order of Canada

For his contributions to mathematical statistics and for his leadership in expanding the field in academia and government.

Jim Zidek was a member-at-large at the UBC Association of Professors Emeriti from April 2011 to April 2014.

Veronica Strong-Boag, C.M., Professor Emeritus of Educational Studies (2013)

For her activism, for her prolific career as a historian and for her research that has made the history of women an integral part of the study of history in Canada. 

Mark Thompson, C.M., Professor Emeritus of Commerce and Business Administration (2002)

Mark Thompson has helped improve working conditions in Canada. Professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia’s business school, he has advanced the field of industrial relations and is known as an expert in public-sector collective bargaining. A well-regarded arbitrator in labour-management disputes, he has been engaged in public discussions related to labour issues, employment standards, workplace health and safety, and the legal frameworks governing negotiations. His work has played an important part in influencing public policy in Canada.
