SIG: Okanagan Outdoor Activities Group
April 20, 2026, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm
McDougall Rim
Our next emeritus excursion will be a hike to McDougall Rim. This is not an especially long hike (2.5 km in, plus 2.5 km out), but it is very steep. Be warned!
We'll park at the trailhead at about 635 m elevation, and have lunch at the viewpoint (at about 1005 m elevation). So, expect about 370 m elevation gain.
There should be lots of balsamroot, saskatoons and serviceberries in bloom. The view from the top is quite spectacular.
Much of trail was likely impacted by the 2023 McDougall Wildfire, so, as a precaution, I won’t be wearing my best clothes! Good hiking boots strongly recommended.
We’ll meet at 9:30 AM on April 20th at the McDougall Rim Hiking Trail Trailhead.
Here are the directions to the trailhead from Kelowna: https://maps.app.goo.gl/rDsHt1GaxDrMhGxK6
Note that the trailhead is not particularly well marked. So, you might want to use your phone or GPS for navigation.
Also note that the expansion of a gravel pit has imposed a short detour on Bartley Rd. Driving south on Hwy 97 in West Kelowna, turn right onto Bartley Rd. Take the third exit at the roundabout. Continue on Shannon Lake Rd for 400 m. Turn right to get back onto Bartley Rd. Drive 2.4 km uphill to the trailhead.
People coming from Vernon may wish to carpool to reduce our overall carbon footprint.
Please let Melanie Jones (melanie.jones@ubc.ca) know if you are planning on coming.
