"AGING WELL: THE BRAIN – BODY CONNECTION"

AN ELDER ACADEMY AND INSTITUTE ON AGING AND LIFELONG HEALTH (IALH) EVENT

Several factors influence our ability to age well. Some of these, such as genetics, are not under our control. This series will examine the impact of physical activity on brain health as well as the impact technology can play in understanding and modifying behaviours. The presenters are all affiliated with the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria, a research centre committed to promoting and conducting basic and applied research to improve the health and quality of life of individuals across the life course.

Clean Energy in the 21st Century

A Path to Climate and Geopolitical Stability

Energy is one of the most important challenges facing humanity today, forming a nexus with the environment, food, health, and global security and prosperity. Since the late 1700s and the start of the industrial revolution our dependence on fossil fuels has grown and resulted in significant climate change and global instability.

In 2021 two important reports were published, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report and the Net Zero 2050 Roadmap by the International Energy Agency (IEA). These reports provide scenario analysis of expected climate change and the path to reduce the impacts of the energy system by 2050. Electrification of the energy system (over 50% by 2050) and phasing out of fossil fuel use, and the use of batteries, fuel cells, and biofuels and hydrogen are cornerstones of the plan.

The transition away from oil and gas is key but carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) and timing are important in the near-term to meet energy and climate change requirements, and for geopolitical stability. This talk will discuss the clean energy plan and transition, related research at UBC, and some of the potential issues we face in this massive undertaking.

Living as a local: reflections on 16 years of Home Exchanging

Presenters:  Amanda Skoll and Gerry Marquette

Home exchanging is a wonderful way to travel!  It provides the opportunity to immerse oneself in non-tourist areas, take advantage of local knowledge and save lots of money.  We will talk about 16 years of over 40 home exchanges and provide guidance on how to go about becoming involved in this type of travel.

If you are currently not on the email list of the EC travel interest group and wish to receive our mailings, please contact Paul Steinbok at psteinbok@cw.bc.ca.

Community Volunteer Group - April 14 at 4pm

with invited guest Holly Jones from MOSAIC

Join us for Zoom meetings with invited guests who share volunteer oppourtunites in our community. Hosted by Nancy Gallini.

We are fortunate that Holly Jones, the volunteer coordinator at MOSAIC, will join us to tell us about volunteer opportunities for helping refugees and immigrants resettle in Canada.  Several members of the Community Volunteer Group expressed learning more about this area of volunteerism, especially given the crises in Afghanistan and Ukraine, and Canada’s pledge to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees and an “unlimited” number of displaced Ukrainians.

MOSAIC is one of the largest non-profit organizations that help immigrants and refugees resettle in Canada: https://www.mosaicbc.org/. In addition to telling us about this wonderful non-profit and related organizations that work with refugees and immigrants, Holly also will provide suggestions on how to best match your interests and skill set with volunteer positions.  This will be a great opportunity to learn how we can support new residents from Afghanistan, Ukraine and other parts of the world in the course of making Canada their new home.

Join the Community Volunteer Group mailing list: members receive the Zoom links in advance of all meetings. Please email Nancy.Gallini@ubc.ca and express your interest.

Attend just this session: please contact Nancy.Gallini@ubc.ca to receive the meeting link.

*Note about group name change* In the last meeting on March 3 the group decided to rebrand as the Community Volunteer Group (formerly Volunteer Group)

Green College Series on Intergenerational Trauma

Releasing the Trauma Effects of War: Healing Through The Integration of Music with Therapeutic Approaches to Trauma Recovery

This is an integrated presentation on how music and performance can contextualize injury and recovery from war related trauma among veterans and their families. This will be demonstrated through a performance developed and directed by Nancy Hermiston including music students and veteran students performing the famous "Sleep" Chorus from Silent Night, an opera depicting the famous Christmas truce of World War I, a moment when arms were laid down, voices came together in song and for a short time humanity returned to the earth.

Nancy Hermiston Chair of the Voice and Opera Divisions of UBC's School of Music, and Director of the UBC Opera Ensemble, with Richard Vedan and Marv Westwood

Nancy Hermiston, Chair, Voice and Opera & Director, UBC Opera Ensemble
