Wingspan Gala
You are cordially invited to attend UBC's Wingspan 2024 Gala. Wingspan is a project of the UBC Faculty of Education that performs research-creation and showcases dis/Deaf artists' lived experiences to challenge and transform stereotypes and ableim. The Wingspan Gala celebrates dis/Deaf artists in residencies that took place in 2024 in K-12 schools in three Canadian provinces--BC, Manitoba and Ontario. While this work has been going on for about three decades it has not been formalized as part of both sustained artistic residencies in schools. This past year eight dis/Deaf artists worked collaboratively with licensed teachers teaching about disability/Deaf inclusion, accessibility and pride in K-12 classrooms.
Be sure to join us for the launch, celebration and honoring of Wingspan 2024 where we will view the Wingspan film, Wings Rising: Disability Justice, Art and Education, Directed by Thomas Buchan and Produced by Leslie G. Roman Wingspan at UBC. The celebration will take place on November 12th 4:00-7:15 pm at the University of British Columbia Ponderosa Commons.
