Pandemic: A Conversation

Seeking to encourage and sustain engagement among Emeritus College members and a wider audience, when even moderately-sized in-person gatherings are impossible, the UBC Emeritus College invites you to join one of our upcoming conversations on a topic of broad and current importance. Convened every month, on the Zoom platform, conversations will be interactive and moderated. They will begin with three short presentations from Emeritus colleagues, offering different perspectives on the chosen topic. After a short discussion among panelists, audience members will be invited to join the conversation.

Our conversation on PANDEMICS, brings together scholars from the disciplines of History, Law, and Pharmaceutical Science.
Chris Friedrichs will contrast the social and economic impact of COVID-19 today and the Bubonic Plague in the past;
Claire Young will consider the value of the Income tax system as a tool during the pandemic;
Marc Levine will reflect on why it takes so long to develop treatments and vaccines.
Our Moderator is Anne Junker, from the Department of Pediatrics and BC Children’s Hospital.

Each of our three presenters offered an extended discussion of their topic in the "One Hour at UBC series" developed by UBC Extended Learning. Links to each of these presentations are below, should you wish to gain additional background, although this is not a requirement for participation in the conversation.

Chris Friedrichs
Professor Emeritus of History (2018)

Chris Friedrichs is a professor emeritus of history. He retired in 2018 after teaching European and world history at UBC for 45 years. His research interests have focused largely on the history of European cities from the 16th to the 19th century, including aspects of demographic history and the impact of warfare and epidemic diseases on urban life. His publications include The Early Modern City, 1450-1750 and Urban Politics in Early Modern Europe.

Claire Young
Professor Emerita of Law (2014)

Claire Young is Professor Emerita at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Her research and teaching focus on tax law and policy, with a special interest in the impact of the tax system on women. She is the author of several books and numerous articles. She was the recipient of the UBC Killam teaching award twice in her career and the SSHRCC Therese Casgrain award for her work on women and economic issues.

Marc Levine
Professor Emeritus of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2017)

Prof. Levine’s teaching included therapeutics of neurological and psychiatric diseases and disorders, pain management, clinical pharmacology, and methods for design and analysis of clinical and biomedical research. The latter included the basis for diagnostic and screening tests and their application to research and clinical practice. His research interests included drug metabolism, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacokinetics and clinical trials. Since 2009 he has been Chair of the UBC Children’s & Women’s Research Ethics Board.

Anne Junker
Associate Professor Emeritus of Paediatrics (2018)

Pediatric immunologist Anne Junker has spent upwards of 45 years learning about the factors that make people more or less susceptible to infectious diseases. In addition to caring for children with immune deficiency disorders, she has been devoted to improving people-based research. She helped establish the UBC-CW research ethics board; chaired the Quality Committee of the BC Clinical Trials Network; and led a national network that interacted internationally to develop a global pediatric trials network.
