Lecture Title: Can We Translate Modifiable Risk Factors for Dementia into Our Lifestyle? Yes!
Summary: Dr. Serge Gauthier will discuss the latest findings on modifiable risk factors for dementia, based on large-scale epidemiological studies worldwide. The Lancet Commission on Dementia, published this summer, identified fourteen modifiable risk factors. Some are relevant to early life, such as limited education, while most apply to mid-life and beyond. These factors include high LDL cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, hypertension, obesity, and lack of physical activity. Other risk factors, including air pollution, social isolation, and hearing and visual impairment, were highlighted during the COVID pandemic. Additionally, brain injury, depression, and excessive alcohol consumption are commonly recognized risks. Further research may confirm additional risk factors, such as dental disease and impaired sleep.
