SUPPORT CANADA'S FIRST EMERITUS COLLEGE

When professors reach the end of their formal career, they are not your average retirees; they are teachers who have shaped young minds for decades. Experts with the life experience to gain wisdom from raw knowledge. and intellectuals who know there is always more to learn.

Universities, understandably, tend to focus on the young, But the University of British Columbia recognizes that as the university's future comes into shape, we need those with the discernment and hard-won experience to help guide us.

In 2018, the University of British Columbia became the first university in Canada to formally recognize the invaluable resource of our emeriti by creating an Emeritus College. The college - which grew out of the good work of the UBC Association of Professors Emeriti - creates a formal path for retired faculty to continue to support the academic mission of UBC.

the life of an emeritus

The UBC Emeritus College brings retired UBC professors and administrators together so they can continue to influence evolution of the university as it implements its new strategic plan, "Shaping UBC's Next Century". the college gives members the opportunity to offer their rich and refined experience as the university considers new projects and paths. In addition, the members support the university and directly influence students through classroom teaching and guest lecturing, academic research, expert advice, mentorship and philanthropy.

A number of exciting projects are already underway at the Emeritus College, adding to the academic tapestry of UBC:

  • An in-depth, engaging retirement educational program including professionals from many complementary fields;
  • A twice-yearly Transition to Retirement seminar, in collaboration with UBC Faculty Relations;
  • An annual academic symposium on the theme "Scholarship in the Future University". The theme for 2020 was "Searching for the Perfect City" and unfortunately had to be cancelled.
  • An inaugural annual Emeriti Scholar in Residence (Planned)
  • An annual award for excellence in the innovative and creative endeavours of Emeriti since attaining Emeritus status (2022)

Become a founding donor

The next steps in the evolution of the college is to create and grow an endowment that ensures its long-term success and independence. At the moment, the Emeritus College depends on external funding, which is not guaranteed in perpetuity. The UBC Emeritus College is seeking to create an initial endowment of $400,000 putting the college in an excellent position to be self-sufficient in perpetuity.

We invite you to consider enhancing your support of UBC as a founding Emeritus College donor. Your support will build a strong foundation for this rich resource for future retirees.
Thank you for your consideration.
