General Meetings
May 4, 2022, 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Join us at our Annual General Meeting with invited speaker Dr. David P. Wilkinson.
Dr. Wilkinson’s research is focused on energy conversion and storage, and providing advanced sustainable solutions for energy and water use. David will talk about clean energy and the role that fuel cells (hydrogen and batteries) will play and are playing in addressing climate change and sustainability.
Clean Energy in the 21st Century
A Path to Climate and Geopolitical Stability
Energy is one of the most important challenges facing humanity today, forming a nexus with the environment, food, health, and global security and prosperity. Since the late 1700s and the start of the industrial revolution our dependence on fossil fuels has grown and resulted in significant climate change and global instability.
In 2021 two important reports were published, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report and the Net Zero 2050 Roadmap by the International Energy Agency (IEA). These reports provide scenario analysis of expected climate change and the path to reduce the impacts of the energy system by 2050. Electrification of the energy system (over 50% by 2050) and phasing out of fossil fuel use, and the use of batteries, fuel cells, and biofuels and hydrogen are cornerstones of the plan.
The transition away from oil and gas is key but carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) and timing are important in the near-term to meet energy and climate change requirements, and for geopolitical stability. This talk will discuss the clean energy plan and transition, related research at UBC, and some of the potential issues we face in this massive undertaking.
