Jaap Nico Hamburger

'Ethno-cultural violence' - a personal reflection on resilience
Jaap Nico Hamburger, Mécénat Musica Composer in Residence and CMC Associate Composer

An individual's psychological response to trauma may not evolve by chance. Rather, it may be informed by aspects of a socio-political and cultural nature. During this lecture, Jaap Hamburger will overlay the influence of political regimes, religion, scientific progress and cataclysmic world events on the development of resilience to trauma.

A former Interventional Cardiologist, Jaap Hamburger is the current Composer in Residence with Mécénat Musica in Montréal. His compositions include commissions from orchestras (Turning Point Ensemble, Ensemble Caprice, Orchestre Classique de Montréal, the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, Festival Classica) and chamber musicians (including “400 Years of Dutch Keyboard Music,” Polina Gubnitskaia, Minkin-Shemer Duo). His works have been performed and recorded in Canada, The Netherlands and Israel. He was recently commissioned by the Government of the Netherlands and the United Nations to compose a new concerto for harp and orchestra that was premiered on occasion of the 75th anniversary of the International Court of Justice. Other commissions include works for Discovery Channel as well as European broadcasting companies. His 2nd chamber symphony "Children’s War Diaries" was nominated for the Dutch national composer’s award and for the 2022 JUNO award for best classical composition. The premiere of his first opera “ARIELLA” is slated for the autumn of 2023. Hamburger is a Canadian Music Centre Associate Composer.

'Psychological Trauma and Resilience' is a cross departmental collaboration between UBC's Green College and Emeritus College.

Presentations in the Emeritus College Series at Green College Intergenerational Effects of Psychological Trauma (2021-22) revealed an interest, appetite and need for further conversations related to the development of resiliency among individuals and groups, and how they can cope more effectively and recover from the impact of various traumas. Building on this foundation, the six-part series Psychological Trauma and Resilience will embark on a journey to consider the many ways in which individuals and groups respond to trauma, possible approaches to coping with trauma and specific strategies for recovery.

Series Conveners: Marv Westwood, Counseling Psychology, with Judith Hall, Pediatrics and Medical Genetics; and Richard Vedan, Social Work

Event Dates: Oct 12, Nov 9, Jan 11, Feb 8, Mar 14, Apr 16

In-person with livestream option

Join us in-person at Green College on the UBC Vancouver Campus or virtually. The session will be followed by a reception.
