Series at Green College October 20, 2022
'Disciplines Over Time: Making, Keeping and Breaking the Boundaries of Knowledge' is a cross departmental collaboration between UBC's Green College and Emeritus College.
This series will bring together scholars who inhabit the same academic discipline or field of study, and are at different stages of their careers, to talk about how the boundaries separating their field of specialization from other fields have changed over time. The conversation will inevitably lead to a consideration of cross-disciplinary influences and interdisciplinary trends, as participants account for changes in the cognitive strength of sub-disciplines and the rise and fall of disciplinary paradigms. The intent will be to identify underlying reasons for the observed changes and, by the end of the series, to draw some general conclusions about mechanisms of (inter)disciplinary interaction and development, in the spirit—if not necessarily the style—of Thomas Kuhn and Michel Foucault.

GEOGRAPHY OVER TIME: AN INTELLECTUAL KALEIDOSCOPE
This first Emeritus College Series at Green College event of the year will feature a conversation between Geography scholars at various stages in their career and research. The moderator will ask the panelists a series of questions about their perspectives on the history and development of their discipline, and the discussion will be opened at an early stage to members of the audience.

30 years experience as a host and traveler with Servas.
Presenters: John Spinelli, Prof. Emeritus of Population and Public Health and Monica Baillie
Servas International started in 1949 with the goal of promoting peace and mutual understanding among peoples, cultures, and nations through travel. Today, Servas has hosts in more than 100 countries, who offer free hospitality to Servas travelers, and share their lives for a few hours or days. We have hosted over 100 travelers from over a dozen countries in the 30 years we have been members, and have stayed with Servas hosts in 8 countries. It is a exceptional way to meet new people and learn about the different views and culture of the visitors you host and the hosts you visit.

Title: Laos
Presented by: Nancy Langton, Ass. Prof. Emerita, Commerce and Business Administration
Laos, in Southeast Asia, though landlocked, is traversed by the Mekong River. It is a diverse and poor country, with a mountainous terrain, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements and Buddhist monasteries. It is one of the few remaining communist countries. Vientiane is the capital and where this journey begins. The talk will briefly cover the impact of the Vietnam war on the country, take you through the countryside, and show you some of the people and the food. Areas visited in addition to Vientiane include Oudomxay and Louang Prabang, as well as a trip down the Mekong River.

Wall Catalyst Program October 20, 2022
The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and the UBC Emeritus College have assembled a cohort of Emeriti to participate in the 2022-23 PWIAS Catalyst Program.
The Wall Catalyst Emeriti cohort will meet monthly to share research experience and engage with guest lecturers on the topic of the "Climate and Nature Emergency".

LEcture - Health, equity and collaboration as catalysts for regional climate adaptation in BC
Craig Brown, PhD
Climate Change and Health Lead, Vancouver Coastal Health
Craig Brown is a Climate Change And Health Lead at Vancouver Coastal Health. In this public health role, he supports climate change adaptation and mitigation projects, with a strong emphasis on community collaboration, equity, and reconciliation. Craig is also an author on national and international climate assessments, including the IPCC Sixth Assessment report, and an associate faculty member at Royal Roads University in the Master of Arts in Climate Action Leadership program.

Members of the UBC Emeritus College and the general public are invited to attend a lecture by the guest speaker. There will be a question period following the presentation.

Baba Yaga House and other models for living for women retirees
The recent crises in long term care as a result of the Pandemic have emphasized the need for coming up with new models for aging demographics. It remains a well-documented fact that women generally have fewer access to resources than men when it comes to this stage of their lives. The group is intended to comprise those who wish to delve further into the possibilities for self-governing models of group living that combine independent spaces with communal ones (co-housing, coop housing etc.). We will share experts and expertise (including inspiring writers, artists and film directors) that exist in the field to see what is possible. It is anticipated that pooling our knowledge will provide a range of realistic models for the future and may even have direct practical outcomes. While the call to participate is initially directed at women only we will decide at the first meeting whether to stay with this model.

Penny Gurstein is Professor Emeritus from the School of Community and Regional Planning, UBC, and, currently, Director of Housing Research Collaborative at UBC. Her research focuses on the delivery of affordable and secure housing, its problems and solutions.
We are delighted to welcome her as our first speaker. She will present on innovative housing models for care and support.

An enjoyable AAA ride (All Ages and Abilities).
Route: Pacific Spirit Park - UBC
This ride is designed as an exploration of Pacific Spirit Park and the UBC campus. There will be a number of stops along the way, one or two perhaps involving short walks and talks; Sites/ sights include Camosun Bog; Pacific Spirit Park; South Campus development; and the length of Main Mall (and a bit more), at various points along which there will be disquisitions on the development of UBC
Start and end at University Golf Club, where we will gather at the end of our outing for lunch and adieus until next year.
