South West USA in April/May: Golf, flora, fauna and natural wonders
with Rick Stokes, Associate Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics
After a long drive from Vancouver to Palm Desert, CA we joined friends at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club for 10 days of golf, horse trekking and sightseeing including the Salton Sea and Joshua Tree National Park. We then made our way to Page AZ to visit the Antelope Slot Canyons and Horseshoe Bend. Then onto Monument Valley and Mystery Valley on the AZ - UT state line. Next, we travelled north to Moab UT to visit Arches National Park, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point. Although all these sights were “touristy”, we were pleasantly surprised with our experiences at all the places we visited and were amazed by the spectacular scenery. Somewhat exhausted, we finally drove back home via OR and WA. I will show photos of some of the animals, plants and geological wonders we saw on our travels.

The Roots and History of The Beatles
With John Michell
Do you remember where you were the first time you heard the Beatles? I do, and so does every rock musician for the last 50years. There was a freshness and energy that we had never heard before, and it was young and alive and they were the perfect sound for the times. The Beatles themselves were creative, talented and funny. Add George Martin to give them a little help with the music and add Brian Epstein to show them to the world and you have BEATLEMANIA. We’ll take a look at how this phenomenon came to be and look at the story behind the four lads from Liverpool. The music, the business, the people and the times that gave us this amazing Magical Mystery Tour.
Every Thursday from 11:00am-12:30pm for 6 weeks starting on January 18th, 2024
$120 for the whole course or $30/class

Canada’s Homelessness Crisis
with Alison Smith, PhD, Associate Professor , Dept of Political Science, University of Toronto, Mississauga
Despite billions of dollars and countless promises to end homelessness in communities across Canada, more and more people continue to find themselves without safe and adequate housing. Previously hidden, homelessness exploded into full view in communities of all sizes in 2020, notably in encampments in parks and public spaces. The number of encampments that remain in communities across the country reveals deep inequities and insecurities in the social safety net and the housing system in particular.
