with Dr. Philipe de Souto Barreto, Professor of Gerontology, Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3 and Director of the Institute on Aging at the Gerontopole, Toulouse University Hospital

Dr. Philipe de Souto Barreto is Professor of Gerontology (Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3) and is the Director of the Institute on Aging at the Gerontopole, Toulouse University Hospital (WHO Collaborating Center for Frailty, Clinical & Geroscience Research & Geriatric Training). With a PhD in Bio-cultural Anthropology, he has leaded and participated in international task forces, particularly on topics related to exercise, frailty, and geroscience. Philipe contributed to several national and international research projects as PI, local PI, and co-investigator (including the INSPIRE platform on Geroscience). Philipe has been invited as a speaker at national and international congresses and has published hundreds of papers in prestigious journals. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging (IF 5.8).

This lecture may be viewed in-person at the Rudy North Lecture Theatre in the Centre for Brain Health at UBC or over Zoom.

Ms. Leslie Weir

Library and Archives Canada Collections 24/7: Connecting Canadians to Their Stories
with Ms. Leslie Weir, Librarian and Archivist of Canada

Ms. Weir is the first woman to serve as Librarian and Archivist of Canada. She has played important roles in many transformative moments at the Canadian Research Knowledge Network and in research libraries and archives in Canada. Ms. Weir is one of the founding architects of Scholars Portal, the state-of-the-art research infrastructure in Ontario universities, and served as Chair of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. She has also served as President of Canadiana.org, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, and the Ontario Library Association. Ms. Weir is currently a member of the Forum of National Archivists Steering Committee and Vice-Chair of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries. She is the President-elect for 2023-25 and President for 2025-27 of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

Intergenerational March | Sep 30

Join us for an intergenerational march to commemorate Orange Shirt Day (OSD). Members of the UBC community, families and those in solidarity are welcome to participate. The march is intergenerational, and aims to be educational and supportive to the Indigenous community on campus and beyond. Educational activities will allow younger participants to connect with the original inhabitants of the land and plant a seed to continue these conversations of a difficult era in Canadian history at home.

Hands Back, Hands Forward for Indigenous Education
with Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem, Emeritus Professor of Educational Studies​​​

Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem will share her personal and professional experiences in Indigenous education, from early learning to graduate education.

The reflection of Hands Back will focus on Indigenous ways of knowing, policies, research, and programmatic approaches that have created successful Indigenous educational pathways in British Columbia and UBC. Hands Forward will address continuing educational challenges and exciting possibilities for the future of Indigenous education in this era of truth and reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenization.

Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem, is a member of the Stó:lō First Nation and has kinship in St’at’imc First Nation in British Columbia. Over a 45-year educational career, Q’um Q’um Xiiem has served as a school teacher, curriculum developer, researcher, author, university leader and professor. She is Professor Emeritus in the UBC Department of Educational Studies. At UBC, she has held the leadership positions of Director of the First Nations House of Learning, Associate Dean for Indigenous Education, and the Director of UBC’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program. In 2018, Q’um Q’um Xiiem, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her lifelong contributions to advancing Indigenous education in K-12 and post-secondary education through policy, programs, curricula, and research.
