Nancy Gallini - Member at Large (2023 - 2026)

Nancy has been Professor Emeritus in UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics (VSE) since 2017.  She began her academic career in the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto in 1979.  She served as Department chair at Toronto during 1995-2000 and, in 2002, she was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UBC.  After completing her term in 2010, she joined the VSE and served as interim director of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Research during 2014-15.  Nancy has a BA in Mathematics and an MA in Economics from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Nancy’s research areas are industrial organization, and the economics of intellectual property and innovation. She has served on several editorial boards of economics journals, including the American Economic Review and the Canadian Journal of Economics, and has been a member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s governing council and the Mitacs Research Council.  As dean, she was awarded UBC’s Margaret Fulton Award in 2010 for her contributions to student development and the university community. In 2017-18, Nancy served as president of the Canadian Economics  Association and was appointed Fellow of the Canadian Economics Association in 2020.  Since retiring, Nancy has engaged in several volunteer activities.  In addition to the UBC Emeritus College Council, she currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Vancouver Council of Care Canada, the Board of Academics without Borders, the Advisory Board of the Neglected Global Disease Initiative, and as convenor of the Emeritus College Community Volunteer Group.

Wendy Hall - Member at Large (2022 - 2025)

Dr. Wendy A. Hall is a Professor Emeritus of the School of Nursing. She is the recipient of two UBC Killam Teaching Prizes, a Registered Nurses Association of BC award of excellence in Nursing Education and a College of Registered Nurses of BC award of excellence in Nursing Research.Dr. Hall received the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Award for Excellence in Nursing Education (Tenured) in 2016 and was inducted as a Canadian Academy of Nursing Fellow in 2022. Dr. Hall has been the School of Nursing Emeritus representative since 2020. Her program of research focuses on building parental capacity, particularly competence and confidence, and linking parental capacity to healthy child development, particularly in the area of pediatric sleep. Dr. Hall has developed behavioral interventions to assist parents to manage children’s sleep problems and acts as a consultant to parents who are experiencing children’s sleep problems. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts. Dr. Hall served as an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and as an Associate Director the School of Nursing Graduate Program. She was a UBC Senator from 2008-2014. She has remained active in research projects following her retirement.

David Hill - Member at Large (2023 - 2026)

David Hill earned his degree in pharmacy and masters degrees in clinical pharmacy and business administration from the University of British Columbia.  He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.  He joined the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1988 and served as associate dean for external affairs from 1993 to 2002.  While at UBC he was a long-time member of the Senate curriculum committee.  He has also held appointments as associate dean in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 2002 to 2006 and as dean of the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan from 2009 to 2015.

He has served terms as president of four national or provincial organizations representing the clinical or academic interests of the profession of pharmacy and was executive director of the Canadian Council for the Accreditation of Pharmacy from 2006 to 2010.  In 2007, Dr. Hill was named as one of the 100 most prominent members of the pharmacy profession over its history in Canada by the Canadian Pharmacists Association in celebration of the centennial of that organization.   He has been a member of the UBC Emeritus College and its membership committee since 2018.  He has chaired the membership committee since 2021.

Alan Mackworth is a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science. He works on constraint-based artificial intelligence with applications in vision, robotics, situated agents, assistive technology and computational sustainability. He is known for his work on constraint satisfaction, robot soccer, cognitive robotics, hybrid systems and constraint-based agents. He has authored over 130 papers and co-authored two books: Computational Intelligence: A Logical Approach and Artificial Intelligence: Foundations of Computational Agents.

Alan co-founded, and happily taught in, the pioneering UBC Cognitive Systems Program, spanning Arts and Science. He held a CRC in AI and served as President of three national and global AI societies: CAIAC, IJCAII, and AAAI.  He was the founding Director of the UBC Laboratory for Computational Intelligence and of the UBC Centre for AI Decision-making and Action (CAIDA). He also co-founded two NCEs, IRIS and AGE-WELL, and the AI network of BC (AInBC). He currently acts as a consultant and occasional lecturer. He is a Fellow of AAAI, CAIAC, CIFAR, AGE-WELL and the Royal Society of Canada.

Dr. Paul Rogers: BSc, MBChB, DCH(Lond) FRCPC, FRCP(Lond) MBA is a Clinical Professor Emeritus, Dept of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch RSA. For the past 40 years, Dr. Rogers has worked in tertiary, university affiliated hospitals with clinical, teaching, research (clinical trials) and administrative responsibilities. He is the former Head of the Division & Program of Pediatric Oncology/Hematology/BMT at BC Children's Hospital. He is former President of the medical staff of Childrens & Womens hospital.

He is the former co-chair of the Canadian National Task force for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) patients with cancer. He is the past Secretary General on the Board of The International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) and involved with the SIOP Pediatric Oncology in developing Countries Committee (PODC).  He remains active in clinical research with emphasis on nutrition, supportive care and longterm follow up of cancer survivors. He continues to teach and examine students, residents  and co-supervise PhD students.

Patricia Shaw - Member at Large (2021 - 2024)

As a linguistic anthropologist, Patricia A. Shaw founded the First Nations Languages Program at UBC, and continues post-retirement to work in collaboration with several Indigenous communities and scholars on endangered language documentation and reclamation initiatives.

She was the Founding Editor of the UBC Press First Nations Languages Series; Director of the Aboriginal Languages and Literacy Institute at UBC (2006); and Director of the BC Breath of Life Archival Institute for First Nations Languages (2017). 

International invited faculty positions include Semester at Sea; the Institute on Collaborative Language Research (CoLang); the UC Berkeley Breath of Life, and the Smithsonian National Breath of Life Archival Institutes for Indigenous Languages. As well, she served as President of the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas (SSILA).

She has been honoured with the UBC Dean of Arts Award (2015) and the SSILA Ken Hale Award (2017).

Paul Steinbok is Professor Emeritus of Surgery. He was Head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at British Columbia Children’s Hospital (BCCH) from June 1984 to December 2012. In addition, he was Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee from 1992-1995, and Medical Director of the Neurosciences program from 1995 to 2017. In 2012, he received the UBC Dept. of Surgery Richard J. Finley Senior Investigator Award in recognition of his research activities. He has been on the executive of the Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgery (AANS/CNS), the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons (ASPN) and the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN), of which he was the President from 2011-2012.

Dr. Steinbok retired from clinical practice in 2017 and from his UBC professorship in 2020. During retirement, he has been volunteering, mainly for Jewish Family services. He has continued to spend time with his hobby of gardening and has increased his involvement in photography. He is active in the UBC Emeritus College, particularly in the Photography Special Interest Group and the Travel Special Interest Group and is the convenor for the latter group. He is also a member of Transitions to Retirement group and the Volunteer Special Interest Group. He was appointed in August 2022 as the coordinator of the Special Interest Groups cluster of the Emeritus College. He has also been involved with the development of the College’s 2023-25 strategic plan.

Vijay Verma - Member at Large (2022 - 2025)

Vijay Verma, PMI Fellow, PMP, MBA, P.Eng, is an internationally known speaker, trainer and author with more than 40 years of experience in the area of Project Management. He has written the three-volume series originally published by PMI, which includes Organizing Projects for Success, Human Resource Skills for the Project Manager, and Managing the Project Team.

After three successful books published by PMI, Mr. Verma wrote his 4th book The Art of Positive Politics: A Key to Delivering Successful Projects published in June 2018 by Multi-Media Publications Inc. He is working on his 5th book on Leading with Purpose: Positive Power and Inspirational Influence and Next Generation Leadership to be published in 2023.

Mr. Verma received 2009 PMI Fellow Award, 1999 PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award, 1999 PMI Distinguished Contribution Award for significant contributions to the project management profession, and 2020 PMAC Fellow award from Project Management Association of Canada. 

Mr. Verma is currently an Emeritus and has worked for forty years in area of Project Management at TRIUMF (TRI University Meson Facility), Canada’s federally funded Particle Accelerator Centre and Canadian National Research Laboratory at UBC. Here he has provided project management services for projects varying in size, complexity, and diversity. He lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada, with his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren.

Sandra Wilkins - Member at Large (2023 - 2026)

Sandra Wilkins received degrees in Economics, Library Science, and Law from the University of Alberta. She worked as a Law Librarian for over 30 years, at both the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia. She joined UBC as Head of the Law Library in 1998 and has also served in various leadership and management roles. Sandra has enjoyed teaching in the Legal Research and Writing Program and participating on the Allard Hall building steering committee, with responsibility for all aspects of planning the design, equipment and furnishings, and transition to the new space for the library. For her final few years before retiring in 2020, Sandra was an Associate University Librarian with responsibility for the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. 

On a broader scale, Sandra negotiated the transfer of responsibility for the receipt and administration of theses and dissertations from UBC Library Special Collections to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. She was on the transition team that worked on the logistics of separating the Okanagan University College Library into Okanagan College Library and UBC Okanagan Library. For many years, she represented the Library on the Senate Curriculum Committee, serving as chair of the Applied Faculties Sub-Committee and later as a member of the Editorial Committee. 

Sandra enjoys travelling and also keeps busy with bicycling, playing Pickleball, reading, and exploring Vancouver’s neighborhoods on foot. She is currently enjoying the Wine Appreciation SIG led by David McArthur and the talks by various presenters to the EC Travel Group.
