MEDTalks: Building muscle, building health | June 7

The Southern Medical Program presents MEDTalks: Building muscle, building health
with Dr. Sarah Purcell, BC Assistant Professor and Dr. Sarah Robbins, UBC Clinical Assistant Professor and gastroenterologist

Up to roughly one-third of Canadians have low muscle mass, even in those with higher body weight. As people age, low muscle mass can lead to poor quality of life, complications during surgery or longer hospital stays. It can also significantly impact how long a person might live. The public is invited to hear from health experts about how the intersection of nutrition, exercise and chronic disease prevention can improve overall health.

Dr. Sarah Purcell is an Assistant Professor with the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Science. She is also a researcher with the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management based at UBC Okanagan. Dr. Purcell completed a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition at Florida State University followed by a PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Alberta.

MEDTalks is a health education lecture series exploring current and emerging trends in medicine. Hosted by the Southern Medical Program at UBC Okanagan, researchers and health professionals share their insights and expertise.

The event is free and open to the public with in-person and virtual options available but registration is required.

A field in Slovenia with sheep in the foreground and a great house in the background

Travel Group | June 15

Slovenia: A land of resilience.
with Barbara Bernhardt, Associate Professor Emeritus, School of Audiology and Speech Sciences and Joseph Stemberger, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics

Over the last couple of decades, we have been privileged to make several trips to Slovenia, where Joe has family ties and we both have academic collaborators. From our first visits there, it felt like we were in ‘old Europe’, where changes wrought by the influence of North American culture were less visible than elsewhere. Although only having 2 million inhabitants, Slovenia's south Slavic language and culture have survived centuries of domination. Using photos, video, and narration, we will journey from Joe’s family village of Jablanica (Ya-blan-tsa) to the western and eastern corners of Slovenia, a country of fields, mountains, small towns and villages. Our presentation will be an introductory guide to the geography, history and culture of this small EU nation. Although regretfully not able to share specialties through Zoom such as ‘potica' (po-TEE-tsa), ‘krofi' (Mardi Gras ‘donuts’) and slivovka (Slee-Vo-Ka), we can make a couple of recipes available for those with a culinary bent.

If you wish to receive the zoom link for the meeting and are not already on the EC Travel group list, please contact Paul Steinbok at psteinbok@cw.bc.ca.
