Join award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker, Marina Dodis, to dive deep into iconic imagery depicting the climate emergency.
Photographers and photojournalists have kept us on the edge of our seats for decades as the climate emergency has evolved from “warming” to “crisis” to “boiling point”. In this visual guest lecture, award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker Marina Dodis will talk us through some of the iconic imagery of the climate emergency so far, with a candid look at their backstory. Join us for a fascinating talk as we discover who is in the picture, who isn’t, and why any of this matters.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marina Dodis is a documentary filmmaker with an extensive background in commercial and editorial photography. She has made or contributed to a dozen short films. She has travelled to over 20 countries, immersing herself in diverse cultures and social justice issues.

A New Webinar Series on Life as a Retiree
The UBC Emeritus College is pleased to announce a newly developed series of three webinars tailored for university academics who have retired more recently and for those approaching retirement. The sessions will explore the social, psychological and emotional dimensions of pre-and post-retirement.
The series, developed by AROHE*, is open to all members of the UBC Emeritus College, is free of charge and will be recorded for later viewing. It will feature prominent speakers from Canada (Dr. Michelle Pannor Silver) and the US (Dr. Stacey Gordon) who specialize in the realm of retirement within academia.

MOBILIZING CANADA FOR THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY: LESSONS FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR
with Mr. Seth Klein, Author, and Team Lead and Director of Strategy, Climate Emergency Unit, The David Suzuki Foundation
Seth Klein is a public policy researcher and writer based in Vancouver. He was the founding director of the BC office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), former co-chair of the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition, and founder of the Metro Vancouver Living Wage for Families. He is the author of A Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency (2020). Mr. Klein is a regular columnist with Canada’s National Observer and an adjunct professor in Simon Fraser University’s Urban Studies program, and he remains a research associate with the CCPA’s BC Office.

Pathways to Success: Exploring Veterans' Experiences Transitioning into Post-Secondary Studies
with Alexander Huang, Director of Wellness, Vancouver College
An essential undertaking for all military veterans is transitioning into civilian spheres, with some electing to pursue higher education. This transition process may be complicated by mental health concerns or difficulties with navigating a culturally distinct environment. During this lecture, Alexander Huang will present research findings that explored the experiences of Canadian student-veterans, a population that appears overlooked within the literature. The study is informed by the participants’ stories, as well as their expressed desire to support other veterans’ transitioning into higher education. The lecture provides implications for post-secondary institutions, including ways to enhance counselling centres and the practice of clinicians. Directions for future research is also offered.
'Psychological Trauma and Resilience' is a cross departmental collaboration between UBC's Green College and Emeritus College.
Presentations in the Emeritus College Series at Green College Intergenerational Effects of Psychological Trauma (2021-22) revealed an interest, appetite and need for further conversations related to the development of resiliency among individuals and groups, and how they can cope more effectively and recover from the impact of various traumas. Building on this foundation, the six-part series Psychological Trauma and Resilience will embark on a journey to consider the many ways in which individuals and groups respond to trauma, possible approaches to coping with trauma and specific strategies for recovery.
