Barbara Zeigler

AHVA Gallery, Audain Art Centre: "Reflection Point: A Barbara Zeigler Retrospective"
with Barbara Zeigler, UBC Emerita Professor of Art History, Visual Art and Theory

This exhibition presents a selection of work Zeigler completed over the past five decades broadly focused on the ever-shifting relations between ecosystems and human cultural structures. Early works from the 1970s dealt with Zeigler’s initial recognition of issues related to environmental degradation.

The exhibition runs from November 2-December 1, 2023. Barbara will be present on Saturday, November 18 and 25 from 1-4pm.

Travels in Norway: Knitting, Northern Lights and more
with Linda Wong, Faculty Women’s Club

After spending 5 days in Oslo, I joined an organized Knitting and Northern lights group trip.  After touring Oslo, we travelled by train to Bergen where we embarked on a ferry , which took us up the coast to the most northern and eastern points and then back down to Bergen where the trip ended. As indicated by the name of the tour, we learned a lot about Norwegian wool and knitting and I will share some of that in the talk. We were lucky to see the northern lights on 4 different evenings and learned how to photograph this spectacular phenomenon.  apps, clothing, photographing them, etc) and a few photos of them. On the ferry,  I was impressed by the focus on a lower environmental impact ( less fuel, less food wasted, etc) and an emphasis and pride in Norwegian food and travel.

Community Volunteer Group | Nov 22

Meeting Details: The Community Volunteer Special Interest Group invites all Emeritus College members to join us for our Fall meeting on Wednesday, November 22, 4-5:30pm following the Emeritus College General Meeting.

The gathering will be a great opportunity to share volunteering activities that many of the emeriti are engaged in locally, nationally and internationally across a wide range of activities involving education, indigenous communities, health, the creative arts, the environment, senior living, and more.  We’ll hear from a group of emeriti in several areas as well as learn about various roles you can participate in from hands-on tutoring of youth to providing health services in low- and middle-income countries to serving on Boards of non-profits organizations and NGOs.

If you are interested in speaking about your volunteer experience, please contact Nancy.Gallini@ubc.ca.  Or, alternatively, you can participate by attending the meeting to learn how you might contribute your skills, wisdom and expertise to rewarding volunteer opportunities that are in desperate need of volunteers.  At the meeting we will also share with you our plans to survey our members regarding their volunteer experiences and interests, and to identify dozens of community organizations that emeriti might be interested in exploring and contributing to.

Please join us on Wednesday, November 22 to share your knowledge and learn about the vast array of community volunteer activities that are available, and how to get involved.

Meeting Format: In-person following the General Meeting.
Please confirm your attendance by emailing Nancy.Gallini@ubc.ca

Are Humans Obsolete in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?
with Alan Mackworth, Professor Emeritus of Computer Science

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more and more ubiquitous in our daily lives, some wonder if it could render humans redundant. The talk will touch on some recent advances in AI, including generative AI, and consider their impacts, for better and worse, short term and long term, on our world. The profound changes wrought by AI may require us to reimagine what it is to be human. They are certainly changing the way we work, learn and play.
